Character Base

• Character Name: Bigby, the Abomination
• Age: Physically in his 30s, literally several decades older than that.
• Canon (Date/Year Released)/Canon Point: Darkest Dungeon (2016)/Post-final dungeon (CRAU)
• Items Coming Along:
- Clothing
- Cursed chains

Content Warnings for Character: For the canon, there is generally violence, vomiting, gore, death, mentions of sex (there is a brothel), and self-mutilation. Bigby himself would include warnings of his history with being tortured and has intense depression, as well as body horror since his entire thing is about transforming into a monster.

Character Background

• History:

Bigby's history is portrayed briefly in hints from things he says variously through the game, as well as a one page comic summarizing just a slice of what he's endured before his escape from his captors. I'll gladly link his wiki profile here which does summarize and provide the comic page, but there are other key things to note about him:

- It is clear that Bigby was not always the way he is. It's implied that there was an accident or he was experimented on in order to cause him to become what he is. I'm leaning toward the idea that it was an accident rather than on purpose.
- He was formerly a scientist who worked on a laboratory, and mentions that he had been designing prosthetics.
- A merchant remarks that Bigby was imprisoned for decades undergoing torture, so he's been out of the picture for awhile.
- When stressed and afflicted in combat, Bigby comments about how he used to serve royalty back in the day.
- It does appear that Bigby had family had one point, and his dialogue implies that they betrayed him by turning him in to the local church. He even states that he was promised visitations, but nobody ever came to his cell to see him besides the people tormenting him.
- When he did escape, Bigby has been on the run ever since, and hasn't made an effort to be part of a community until he arrived at the hamlet to offer his support, having no where else to go.
- For the canon point, I would say that Bigby has spent roughly two years in the hamlet, assisting in expeditions into the estate and the Crimson Court, as well as the Farmstead. He is fresh out of the Darkest Dungeon, having learned the upsetting truth of the Heart of Darkness.
- As Bigby is CRAU, it is worth noting he spent a few months in Deer Country, so he is familiar with Trench and some of its workings, as well as some of the Sleepers who are still there. He will be returning with his memories.

• Core Relationships:

Bigby is described as a recluse, that he habitually hides himself from others due to his curse. As a result, he is not an especially social person, and has no significant relationships to make note of. It's extremely worth noting that when he first joins the other characters, initially the most religious of cast will absolutely not interact or cooperate if he's in the party. Those of faith have no tolerance for those with my condition, is his remark about it. Those who had initially refused to work with him would say, I will not serve with this... creature.

This opinion eventually was changed, and there was full cooperation in the party regardless of who and what they were, where they were from, but Bigby is certainly someone described as one of the main outcasts, even in their unusual party. However, this does not keep Bigby from having compassion toward others, and even remarks upon being concerned for the children of the hamlet he is working to protect.

• Summary of CRAU Impact: Previously on Deer Country, Bigby found positivity among his CR and acceptance where he never had before. Some of his self-loathing was soothed, and he had provided advice to his fellow possessed in how to contend with their literal demons.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:

Encouraging - Despite everything that Bigby has witnessed, he retains some semblance of optimism about humanity in general, even if he has little for himself. Under pressure, he is capable of emerging with that resolve with a more positive outlook. This can be easily seen at camp while he's on an expedition with others, offering words of encouragement and conversation even though he is considered an outcast and has endured decades of suffering.

"I can sense the strength within you."
"Will is stronger than hope. Believe me."

Determined - As with his comrades, there are two outcomes of going under pressure: either you become virtuous in those circumstances and stand tall, or you succumb and become your worst self. Bigby is no exception, and although he has been at his darkest version of himself before, he is also fully capable of being his best self as well. Having witnessed horrific atrocities, wicked cultists, monsters, and been at the hands of his torturers, Bigby still can persevere and remain determined. During combat, he will proclaim how he has suffered worse before, that no one will imprison him ever again.

"I can master it! We can master our fate!"
"As long as I am free, I will fight!"

(2+) Negative Experiences:

Despondent - Although there might be a sliver of hope for humanity, Bigby has no hope for himself specifically. He has several mounting fears about his curse, that he is constantly fighting the beast inside of himself to keep control. There is the fear that he may one day slip and harm someone, and he certainly knows in his heart that he's damned for the rest of his unnaturally long life to live with his condition. So, he can be kind of a bummer to be around, and certainly has nothing positive to consider for his own life. As far as he's concerned, the only thing he can fight for is the sake of others; he has no home to truly return to, no family. There is just him, and his eternal war on the inside.

"I am a threat to the innocent. Darkness claims me."
"I have no shelter to regain. No solace exists for me."

Reclusive - Naturally, because of his curse, Bigby is under the impression that he must be withdrawn from others for their own safety. He never expects to really be involved deeply in the lives of others, and certainly would not expect to be treated truly as a human being. To him, it is best that others know to be wary, even if he does yearn for human empathy and compassion. But he is cursed, and he worries it is a waste on someone like him. There are many examples of his withdrawn nature in various quotes:

"I must hide from the world." - Each character has personalized equipment along with a quote that either describes them or is something they say to themselves. In Bigby's case, his two strongest pieces of equipment are his shroud and his shackles, his quote remarking how he must withdraw from the world.
"You shouldn't bother with the damned." - Everyone has the possibility of becoming overwhelmed in Darkest Dungeon, becoming too stressed and afflicted with a condition. Many of Bigby's quotes, particularly when afflicted with Hopelessness, reflect upon his curse.
"Perhaps this violence will soothe it, keep it sleeping..." - When afflicted with Masochism, even then many of his quotes are circling around trying to keep his beast under control.
"Tortured and reclusive... This man is more dangerous than he seems..." - This line is spoken by the Ancestor, who also doubles as the game's narrator and the entire reason the game's plot kicks off. He has a line for each character in observance to their behavior, role, and personality.
"Beaten, branded and imprisoned for untold decades, this furtive vagrant hides a terrible secret. The Eldritch poison coursing through his veins has given him unspeakable power, at a terrible cost. As his form changes, so too does his role in combat!" - The Guild has unique commentary on each primary character in your party. In particular, for Bigby, it observes not just his transformation, but also how he does try to hide himself away.
"You have nothing to fear, my friends. The beast is not for you." - During camp, one of Bigby's skills is to meditate. Although it does increase his stress to keep his beast back, he does genuinely care to keep it from harming his party members.

Essentially, what one can gather from these examples is that although Bigby is habitually withdrawn from others, it is for the sake of their safety. There are several other quotes as well that do emphasize this part of him, and it's one of his most defining features.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers:
Bigby is a cursed man, not unlike a werewolf. In actuality, when the character was being made, it was due to someone's enjoyment of werewolves, so quite literally his curse is similar, only his beast self looks significantly different. In most cases, Bigby is able to control this beast and maintain a sense of sentience -- but he is always fighting for control, and losing it is not impossible. He is also very affected by the moon, and should it be full he is at his most wild. It is also worth noting that the longer Bigby is in his full transformative state, the more stressed he will become to control the monster. The cursed chains that he wears do manage to help keep the beast at bay, but there is no true solution to this matter. Let's do a quick rundown of his abilities.

Enhanced body - Bigby's monster form has thick, leathery skin that protects him just as well as any leathery armor. In addition, he is immensely quick, and incredibly strong with sharp claws and rows of fangs.

Poisonous blood - Already, Bigby has some messed up blood on account of his changes. It is green and poisonous, and Bigby can even transform part of the way, at least enough to cough up some of his blood onto his enemy to... well, poison them. It's not the most attractive thing.

Healing factor - When Bigby transforms, he ends up healing the worst of his wounds, at least enough to keep on living.

Slowed aging - Though not immortal, Bigby's curse has slowed his aging considerably. It is unknown how long he will live for, but it will exceed a normal human.

Absolution - Separation from his transformation, but by seeking absolution and praying to his world's deity, the Light, he is able to heal his wounds somewhat and calm his mind.

• Blood Type: Vileblood
• Omen: Wolf
• Blessed Day: May 15th is the day that Bigby successfully escaped his captors and torturer, which is incredibly significant to him.
• Patron Pthumerian: Bausphomette
• Blood Power Manifestation: Due to the blood type Bigby will be given, his already poisoned blood will be even more poisonous. Isn't that exciting! He'll hate it!
